Bungling armed robber trapped in bank

Dec 26 2008

A BUNGLING Coventry robber who became trapped in a bank during an armed raid in Blackpool has been jailed.

Rikki Doakes, of Strathmore Avenue, Lower Stoke, was caught behind the counter of a branch of Halifax when protective screens dropped down during his attempted robbery.

Although the 22-year-old stole more than £9,000 in cash from the tills, he was unable to flee the building as the front glass doors had been locked.

Doakes was embarrassed further when CCTV footage from the blundering raid was posted on the internet.

Preston Crown Court heard Doakes wandered up and down and made unsuccessful attempts to get out until the police arrived on the scene.

Doakes pleaded guilty to robbery and possessing a imitation firearm.

The crimes date back to a busy Saturday afternoon in the centre of Blackpool on October 25.

Prosecutor Paul Brookwell said the bank was busy with staff and customers, including women and children, when the incident took place at about 1pm.

Doakes walked into the building society brandishing a handgun and shouted “get down”.

Mr Brookwell said: “He held it out in front of him at various times, waving it about and generally aiming it.

“He jumped over the service counter. As this was happening a woman pressed a panic button from behind the counter.

“But not quick enough to stop him jumping over it”
