City College principal Paul Taylor said: “The college is well aware of and very sympathetic to the concerns of Hillfields residents.
“However, we can’t force people to use the facility. Whether or not to prevent people parking on the pavements and streets and the means this might be done is, we believe, is in the hands of the city council.”
Mr Taylor said the car park had originally been for staff and visitors before being opened up to students. The car park will now be opened up to the public on March 1.
Jim O’Boyle (Lab, St Michael’s) welcomed the move but called for parking permits to be introduced.
“It’s a good step forward. They are showing some social responsibility and I hope they encourage not only students to park there but staff as well.
“I would like to see the car park fully utilised and all 460 spaces used every day. I’m not blaming the City College for all the problems in Hillfields.”
