“Our gravest concern is about what services and what care is being provided to these children, and whether someone is properly responsible for them at all times.

“There is a duty of care to all children in care, whether they are asylum seekers or not, but when they become 18 they are told by the authorities they are no longer looked after by social services and they are an adult.

“But the local authorities need to look after the individual needs of each child. Not all 18-year-olds are mature enough to go out on their own.”

Mr Basi said there should be more aftercare for young asylum seekers who often came to them as soon once they turned 18.
