He said he had acted in line with the regulations by disclosing any financial interest when booking, including for the dinner for Value Retail Plc, where he is a director.

In July 2006, Coventry Labour MP Geoffrey Robinson booked a lunch for 24 people, and in January 2008 a dinner for ten, both in the name of New Statesman, when he had declared in the Commons’ register of MPs’ interests he was a paid director and shareholder.

He is still chairman of the New Statesman, which he sold last year.

He said: “I declared my interest in line with the rules. There was no financial gain. The New Statesman fully met the catering costs.”

Asked about the “Cemex Climate Change Book Launch”, Rugby and Kenilworth Conservative MP Jeremy Wright said: “The event was not a commercial promotion or demonstration.

"The book in question is produced in conjunction with a charity and is not sold. There was therefore no breach of the rules.”
