PROTESTERS last night voiced their anger over plans to close Warwick fire station as a public consultation meeting became passionate.
About 100 people – some wearing campaign T-shirts and waving placards – packed into Myton School hall to give fire and county council chiefs a piece of their mind.
Hecklers cried “rubbish” when officials said the controversial proposals were about modernising the service, and not about saving money.
Warwick resident John Holland received warm applause when he thanked the town’s firefighters for “the excellent job they do for us.”
Warwick had a “unique, historic town centre which needs protection.”
Fire chiefs claimed adequate cover for the town could be provided from nearby Leamington, which would receive an extra engine.
But Tim Griffiths, of Myton Road, said the towns were linked by only two bridges, which were heavily congested at peak times, and the area would need more fire cover in coming years as thousands more homes would be built.
“Our needs in terms of fire provision will go up, not down,” he said.
