Shots fired at home of ex-Coventry City official

Nov 20 2009

GUNMEN have opened fire on the home of a former Coventry City Council official in Indonesia.

John Penny, an EU diplomat in the Sumatran province of Aceh, was at home with his wife Monica on Monday night when a shot was fired through a window from a passing motorbike.

The couple were unharmed but the incident reflects rising violence against foreigners in the Islamic region after a German Red Cross worker was shot and seriously wounded two weeks ago.

Mr Penny, a former city treasurer who lived in West Avenue, Stoke Park, in the 1980s, declined to comment on the attack to reporters outside his home the following day.

Police have now pledged to beef up security for foreign nationals, most of whom arrived to help in the wake of the 2004 tsunami which killed tens of thousands of people in Aceh.
