Student housing and shop contracts

Feb 11 2003

G W DEELEY, the Coventry design and build firm, has won two contracts totalling £2 million in Coventry and Warwickshire.

The company is providing student accommodation on behalf of Derwent Housing in a £1.6 million contract in Coventry, and has won a £400,000 contract to extend the Heart of England Co-operative Foodcentre in Wellesbourne.

Four of the most striking Victorian villas in the Earlsdon area of the city are being renovated and converted to provide high-quality student bedrooms and will be titled Lynden House. The two pairs of villas in Spencer Road, which have panoramic views across the city centre's famous three spires, are being transformed in a Public Private Partnership with Derwent and Coventry University. Peter Goodgame, managing director of G W Deeley said:

"It is the first time we have worked with Derwent Housing and we are excited by a project that will provide a total of 62 en-suite student apartments. "We shall be refurbishing the villas tastefully to restore them to their Victorian elegance and the new build to the rear is sympathetic in its design with both the existing buildings and the conservation area as a whole.

"The development will provide high quality, flexible accommodation in a very pleasant area of the city." Paul Casey, business development manager at Derwent Housing, said: "We are pleased to be working in partnership with Coventry University and G W Deeley to deliver this student project and are keen to invest in future opportunities in Coventry and the West Midlands to help to meet a variety of housing needs." In Wellesbourne in Warwickshire, the Heart of England Co-op's Foodcentre will be increased by more than 2,000 square feet.

The sales floor will be expanded by 40 per cent and new warehouse space will be constructed at the rear of the store. The new sales area will be used to nearly double the range of frozen food on display and there will be increased space for the delicatessen counter, fresh meat and grocery ranges. The contract also involves building an extension on three elevations and the store will continue to trade throughout the project.
