‘GAUNTY’ cuts a lively figure of a man on-the-up as he marches into our Corporation Street offices. And well he should. His rise has been meteoric in recent years, much to the dismay of ‘lefties’ - or what he calls ‘Jeremys’ and ‘Amandas’ - everywhere. But Jon is quick to accept that he too has trodden the path on the left side, marching through Coventry in CND protests and running the Tic Toc theatre company. However, it becomes clear that the man sitting in front of me today has travelled a long way since then, mostly in the direction of the right. Indeed, the second of his next two planned books – entitled ‘One Man And His Gob: My Journey To The Right’ (released June 7, 2009) – charts that swing in detail. Story continues ADVERTISEMENT But it’s ‘Gaunty’s Britain: It’s Called Great Britain Not Rubbish Britain’ (released September 2008), that reveals his real passion. “I think we are not feeling good about ourselves at the moment,” he said. “We actually used this on my show. We had a listener say ‘it’s Great Britain, not rubbish Britain’. “We have people from every culture in Britain say the phrase on air. Last week there was a Lithuanian-sounding fella. “All the self-serving pigs in Westminster have been telling us for years not to celebrate being British, and now they are saying we should be. “I said on my radio programme months ago that we should have a flag in every classroom, and I’d like to see a flag on very building in this city. “Now Gordon Brown is saying that is what he wants too.
