I COULDN’T help but smile at John Mutton’s assertion that we must not develop the Meriden gap to preserve out identity. (Letters, December 18).
He is probably too young to remember the same fears being expressed by Coventry council and their exultation to get the assurance that there would definitely be no building allowed in the sacrosanct Green Belt, so ensuring that we did not become a suburb of Birmingham. What happened? They built the enormous National Exhibition Centre with enormous car parks and extended facilities at Birmingham International Airport. So really, how sacrosanct is the Green Belt?
