City man shot in stomach during drive-by shooting

Apr 1 2009

By Priya Mistry

A COVENTRY man was shot in the stomach during a drive-by shooting in Stoke.

The 27-year-old was leaving a house in Goring Road, when he was blasted in the stomach on Wednesday, March 25, just before 8pm.

Neighbours described seeing the injured man’s friends frantically trying to stem the blood with towels, until paramedics arrived.

Many of those living nearby spoke of hearing a gun shot, and the spinning of tyres from a car speeding away from the scene.

The injured man was taken to University Hospital, in Walsgrave, where his condition is described as stable.

Chief Superintendent Deborah Harrod said: “We reassure local residents that this is being treated as an isolated incident.

“Gun crime will not be tolerated, and extensive ongoing enquiries are being conducted to trace the offenders.”

Police officers were seen in Brade Drive, Walsgrave, two days later, in connection with the incident.

The shooting follows another unrelated incident that took place in Valley Road, Stoke Heath, earlier this month.

A mum and her three children were terrified to return to their home, after bullets were fired at the property on March 10.

Anyone with information on the shooting can call West Midlands Police on 0845 113 5000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
