Hawker family backing Japan law change

Apr 1 2009

By Staff Reporter

THE family of murdered Coventry teacher Lindsay Ann Hawker have backed a campaign to change the law in Japan.

Tatsuya Ichihashi, the only suspect in the case of the 22-year-old’s death, is still at large, despite it being two years since her murder.

The former King Henry VIII student, from Brandon, was attacked and strangled, after she taught private student Ichihashi in a coffee shop in the Chiba area of Tokyo in March 2007.

Under current laws 29-year-old Ichihashi could walk free if not found by police within 25 years.

During a five-day visit to Japan, Lindsay’s parents, Bill and Julia, and sisters Lisa and Louise, pledged to help the Sora No Kai group to abolish the ruling.

Family spokeswoman Amanda Stocks said: “They met the group and were really moved by the stories they heard. It made them realise there are other people in similar situations.”
