Sudden Cardiac Death suspected as 26-year-old student collapses at home

Apr 1 2009

By Sandish Shoker

A 26-YEAR-OLD student from Coventry who was popular with everyone who knew him died after collapsing at his home.

Nick Jarram, of Cheylesmore, had no history of health problems and his sudden death, just days before his 27th birthday, has devastated his family and friends.

Nick, who was six months into a photography degree at the Arts Institute at Bournemouth, died on March 14 - minutes after complaining of tight chest pains and his ears popping. It is believed he died of Sudden Cardiac Death.

Ten years ago his brother Andrew, then aged 25, also died from the early symptoms of heart disease but their parents Grace and Malcolm Jarram were never warned that heart problems were hereditary and other family members could be at risk.

Dad Malcolm said photography was Nick’s passion and he was an inspiration to others not to give up on their dreams. He said: “You’d never see him without a smile on his face - he would walk into the room and light up the room for us.”

Nick was a former pupil of St Thomas More Primary School and Bishop Ullathorne Secondary School, and completed a photography course at City College, Coventry last year. His tutor Simon Derry said he was one of the best students he had taught in his 20 years at the college.

“He always worked hard and set a great example to other students in his year, both academically and as an individual.”

Tributes to the keen photographer have been left by his friends on social networking site Facebook and students held candle-lit vigils on Bournemouth beach in his memory.

His girlfriend of three years Nikki Holliday wrote: “Everybody misses you so much. There is a big Nick-shaped hole in many people’s hearts. It is heartbreaking that we won’t be able to do the things we talked about doing. I will love you forever.”

His mum Grace said: “I’m overwhelmed by all the people who have been in touch with us to express their shock and their sympathy.

“It has given me so much joy during such a difficult time.”
