Kenilworth street is a British first

Jan 9 2009

By Martin Bagot

AN ECO-FRIENDLY revamp has seen a Kenilworth street become one of the first in the country to be fitted with new high-tech street lighting.

Henry Street was bathed in high quality white light over the new year after the latest £10,000 Cosmopolis street lanterns replaced 40-year-old sodium street lamps. The move will cut CO2 emissions by 800kg a year.

Councillor John Whitehouse, who secured funding from Warwickshire County Council for the scheme, said he was delighted the new lighting was being pioneered in
Kenilworth.

He said: “Henry Street residents have had to put up with very poor lighting for a long time, so it’s great that their street was chosen for the first installation of this new technology in Warwickshire.

“The Cosmopolis street lanterns look elegant and emit a good even spread of light, while costing less to run.”

Despite being used elsewhere in Europe, all but a handful of British streets are still lit by the yellow light of traditional sodium lamps.

The new lanterns will save £200 a year in electricity costs.

Glyn Thomas, of Leamington and Warwick Friends of the Earth, said:

“Where lights do need to stay on we urge the council to opt for more energy-efficient lightbulbs.”
