Coxy's column - the definitive Sky Blues blog

Jan 29 2008

The tabloids are always full of footballers infidelity, be it to their partners or their team.

In the past week we have been able to read about Ashley Cole's alleged affair with a hairdresser and watch the reaction of his wife, Cheryl, and her family and friends.

Closer to home, and talking just of football, we have seen the story of Leon Best unfold.

One day he was saying he was happy to stay at Coventry City but then, four days later, he was handing in a transfer request – much to the bemusement of the loyal supporters.

It seems the days of Matt Le Tissier,  when players were happy to stay at one club, are long gone.

Supporters are aware that players come and go, some stay for a long time such as Richard Shaw.

Others are gone before they have arrived – Robert Jarni. What supporters do expect is that while a player is under contract he remains loyal to the club and gives his all for the shirt.

Many were amazed to see Leon come as a substitute in the 2-1 fourth round FA Cup win over Millwall and they showed their emotions by booing the player who wants a transfer to his home town club of Nottingham Forrest.

The fifth round draw has handed Coventry another home tie, against big rivals West Brom.

Hopefully this time both teams will finish the game with 11 men and that we can see another entertaining match.

It’s a West Midlands derby with the opportunity to progress to the last eight of the FA Cup so hopefully both sets of players and supporters will be up for this tie, especially as the last two games between the two clubs have produced 10 goals!

I hope that both clubs agree to reward the loyalty of their supporters by pricing the game at a realistic level so that we can, hopefully, fill the Ricoh and produce a brilliant atmosphere with, hopefully, the right result for City.
