More of the same please, City

Coxy's Column - the ultimate Sky Blues Blog

By Natalie Cox

Being a supporter of Coventry City might mean a lot of things but one thing it is not is predictable.

After a terrible Christmas, including a 4-0 hammering at Blackpool, the majority of the Sky Blue Army who travelled to Blackburn to watch the third round FA Cup-tie were not expecting to advance any further in the competition.

However, the team produced one of the shocks of the third round, playing entertaining football and producing excellent goals that every player should be proud of.

And the 4-1 victory has brought pride back to the hearts of the Sky Blue Faithful.

The question is can they transfer that form into the league and show a bit of consistency to move up the table and realise their full potential?

Both the League Cup and the FA Cup have given Coventry City fans something to hold onto, memories of not only brilliant results but also enjoyment watching the style of play.

We know they can play attractive, passing football using the flanks but we rarely see it in the league, especially at the Ricoh.

With a tie against either Millwall or Walsall to look forward to at home in the next round there is an excellent chance for City to progress in the FA Cup.

But I would much rather pick up three points against Leicester or other league opposition than be in the draw for the fourth round of the Cup.

Not because the Cup has lost its magic but because we have a more realistic chance of reaching the play-offs, especially with performances like Saturday's, than reaching the final of the FA Cup – and everyone wants City to play in the Premiership to see the best players and the financial rewards it brings to the club.

If, as Iain Dowie says, we were using the game against Blackburn to send a message of intent to our Championship rivals then the second half of the season should be exciting to watch and may bring back the atmosphere to the Ricoh.

Hopefully the players can reproduce that Cup form, starting at local rivals Leicester on Saturday.

Hopefully the crowds will turn up to games at the Ricoh and show the same spirit and support to the team that was evident at Old Trafford and Ewood Park.

Maybe the Sky Blue Army can be reunited with Ray Ranson and SISU so we can all play our part to move the club forward into the new era and the results and performances seen in both Cups can become the norm.
