Brand new chapter for Bedworth library

Feb 3 2012

BEDWORTH Heath Library has re-opened at its new home in Smorrall Lane.

The facility has been forced to move from its former premises in Smarts Road and into the Bedworth Heath Community Centre as the axe was swung by Warwickshire County Council to slash £2 million from its library and information service budget.

Bedworth Heath, Camp Hill, Hartshill, Bulkington and Keresley libraries were among the 16 that faced the chop but all five were saved and the change of home for Bedworth Heath means that customers will see their library open for 46.5 hours a week rather than just 12.

Bookworms will be able to choose from about 1,500 books including children’s books, adult fiction and non-fiction.

Councillor Damon Brown (Con, Bedworth Heath), who has led the campaign to keep the library open, said: “We have visited the current library building in Smarts Road and identified the shelves, desks, tables, chairs and other equipment we need to move to the community centre. This will be moved in the week prior to the opening in Smorrall Lane at the beginning of February.”

Cllr Colin Hayfield, county council portfolio holder for customers, access and physical assets, said: “Bedworth Heath Library has the potential to be a very good supplement to Bedworth Library for local people and ensures that they have access to books in their locality.”
