Bulkington villagers join forces for library success
Dec 9 2011
THE PEOPLE of Bulkington look ready to give their all to make sure that the village library is a success when new bosses take over in the new year.
After fighting off possible closure, the venue is now set to become a community library and those taking the reins held the first meeting for potential volunteers and were inundated with offers of help.
Mary Beaumont, press officer for Bulkington Community Library, said: “We were delighted with the turnout with a total of 37 people attending throughout the day. Our plans for the future were outlined, renovations in the library, the relocation of the children’s area, the installation of an internet café and the introduction of a drinks service.
“We also enrolled volunteers on various training courses and discussed ideas on fundraising activities, holding presentation events, designing a website, how to become a Friend of Bulkington Community Library and how to make donations. We also identified the links we have formed with Bulkington Children’s Centre, Citizens Advice Bureau, the village centre, Nuneaton and Bedworth Volunteer Centre, and local schools and businesses.
“We are still not able to give an accurate date for opening of the Community Library, as there are several legal procedures to be completed by Warwickshire County Council. We were very heartened by the enthusiasm shown by those people who attended and we look forward to working together to provide a wonderful community service.”
Bulkington was one of five libraries in the borough and 16 in total in Warwickshire that faced the axe this summer as the county council looked to cut £2 million from its library and information service budget.
