New superstore proves a big hit with customers in Bedworth

Dec 9 2011

BEDWORTH’S new multi-million pound supermarket opened its doors to its first customers this week just in time for the Christmas rush.

After months of waiting, the town’s new £27 million Tesco Extra is finally up and running and the people of Bedworth haven’t wasted any time in getting acquainted with the new store.

The old supermarket in Leicester Road was demolished and the new store built, along with retail units and a petrol station, in less than 12 months and more than 140 new jobs have been created.

As well as the usual food and drink on sale, there are new clothing, home entertainment and electrical departments, and even the town’s first phone shop.

The store was officially opened by Bedworth’s MP Dan Byles who was also presented with a cheque for £1,000 by Tesco which will be split between a local junior football team and the Warwickshire Retail Crime Initiative that aims to reduce the level of shoplifting and anti-social behaviour in the town.

Tesco’s connection with the town hasn’t stopped there as the store has sponsored this year’s pantomime of Sleeping Beauty at the Civic Hall.

Tim Norton, general manager at The Civic Hall, said: "I am very pleased that the new Tesco Extra store is supporting this year’s pantomime.

"The Civic Hall Pantomime Company is fast becoming recognised as one of the best around and being associated with a national company the likes of Tesco will help to enhance that reputation even further. The cast were really excited about being invited along to the opening and certainly added some colour and some songs to the proceedings."

Neil Edwards, store manager at Tesco, added: "Wherever a new store is located, we are very keen to be seen to support community activities and events and the panto seemed an obvious choice.

"The Civic Hall is but a stone’s throw away from the new store and I am happy to sponsor the goodie bags for the children who are selected from the audience as well as a donation of £250 towards toys for patients in the children’s ward at George Eliot Hospital."
