Snow joke as vandals target Bedworth United advertising hoardings

Feb 10 2012

SNOW-ROMPING vandals have left a football club facing a £500 repairs bill.

Advertising hoardings around the pitch at Bedworth United FC were ripped away to be used as makeshift sleds during the weekend’s heavy snowfall.

Children were later seen sitting on the plastic signs to slide down a slope at the adjoining Miners’ Welfare Park.

Some of them were captured on film by club groundsman Mark Welch.

He said: “I want to make it very clear that those seen on the boards may not have been guilty of taking them but someone did and if anyone has information they are asked to contact the police.”

Greenbacks’ chairman Peter Randle said: “This is a real pain.

“We’ve lost five boards, which were torn off the perimeter fence.

“They have been paid for by local companies so need to be immediately replaced.

“The boards have been found smashed up so they are ruined.

“This will now cost us at least £500 because the club is not covered by insurance for this sort of thing.

“It is also a big inconvenience.”

Secretary Graham Bloxham added: “We had a similar problem when the snow arrived last year.

“We had taken delivery of 50 hoardings which had been discarded by Coventry City FC and had them stored behind the stand.

“They were all stolen, presumably also to be used as sleds.

“My son and daughter-in-law alerted me to the latest incident when they saw youngsters in the park on Sunday afternoon sliding along on our advertising signs.

“Security is difficult because the gate to the football ground has to be left open for access to the social club.”

The incident at the weekend has been reported to Warwickshire Police, who are investigating.
