Villagers' fury over axed bus route from Bedworth village
Feb 10 2012
VILLAGERS in Hawkesbury are up in arms over the loss of a bus service to Coventry city centre.
The Hawkesbury Village Residents Association has been informed the 60 bus service will be withdrawn from Saturday February 25.
Lynne Price, chairman of the Hawkesbury Village Residents Association, said that despite increased housing in the village there has been no increase in the amenities within Hawkesbury Village and the removal of this bus service would have a detrimental impact.
She said: “We are in 2012 and the public transport in the village is going backwards not forwards. People of the village need to start standing up and fight for a service that is vital to this community.
“People are reliant on basic amenities like a bus service and this will have a very negative impact on many residents who don’t have access to a car or are not able to walk almost a mile to the nearest bus stop.
“We have only recently been made aware of this decision and if National Express does remove this service, it will end in only five weeks. What are people suppose to do after this time?”
The 778 service, which ran between University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire and Bedworth and ran via Hawkesbury Village, was withdrawn in September 2011 as Warwickshire County Council withdrew the funding which subsidised the service.
If the 60 were disbanded, the only bus service through Hawkesbury village would be the 209 which runs from Monday to Friday, leaves Hawkesbury village at 10.35am to Nuneaton via Bedworth and arriving back at 1.35pm.
Lynne added: “We hope that National Express reconsider their decision and allow this service to continue in this area.”
