"Gov speak" can bring real benefits

Oct 30 2008

By Emma Ray

A LEADING business organisation in Coventry and Warwickshire is urging local firms to take advantage of new Government proposals aimed at helping them through tougher times.

Louise Bennett, chief executive of the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, said the Government announcements should only be the start of their support for companies.

And she has called upon businesses in the area to contact the Chamber for advice on the best ways they can make use of packages surrounding funding for training – as well as other support services available.

She said: “We have heard a great deal of rhetoric since the plans were announced to rescue the banking system a couple of weeks ago on how there was going to be massive support for small and medium sized businesses in this country.
“But, until now, there has been very little meat on the bone.
“The announcement on support for training programmes for staff is not something that is really new – but I do welcome the notion that much of the red tape is being removed from taking advantage of this help.
“I have always been a very big advocate of upskilling our companies’ workforces and if that helps to do that, businesses will reap the benefits.
“I am very pleased to see that small and medium sized businesses are now on the Government’s radar and I do hope to see further announcements from them soon.
“We all understand that there is not an endless pot of Government money – but the reduction of red tape on business wouldn’t cost a penny and would help massively at this time.
“And I am sure many business owners and managers out there keep hearing of proposals from the Government but are never actually sure whether they apply to their business.
“That’s why I am urging local companies to contact us because we can help them to translate some of the Government speak into very real benefits to their business.
“There are still opportunities out there to grow businesses and increase turnover, even in this tough time – and we are here to help firms do that.”
