Talk of the town hall - 2012 could be of benefit to us all

Aug 22 2008

By Cllr Marcus Jones, leader of the council

THESE last few weeks I have been following the Beijing Olympics with some interest.

To say the least I have been a little surprised but very encouraged at the performance of our Olympians and the haul of medals that they seem to be amassing.

The success we are seeing in Beijing will hopefully be the catalyst for the 2012 games based in London and will hopefully galvanise a positive spirit towards our hosting of the event.

While the games will be based in London there will be opportunities for events and training camps to be held outside the capital.

We are even hopeful that a training camp may be based here in the borough at the Pingles.

We are on a shortlist of potential venues and my hope is that we can be successful and bring a small taste of the Olympics to the borough.

In addition to the prospect of the possibility of hosting a training camp we could have the potential prospect of young athletes from our borough representing us in 2012.

I was encouraged to see that two of our young swimmers, Rikki Morris from Nuneaton and James Burden from Bedworth, were both successful at the national swimming championships recently held in Sheffield.

Its great to see that we have such talented swimmers here in the borough.

I certainly wish these two young swimmers all the best, it would be great to see them and any other budding athletes from the borough competing in London in four years time.
