Talk of the town hall - how we're making Saturday shopping family fun
Aug 15 2008
By Cllr Marcus Jones, leader of Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council
IF YOU have visited the town centres of Nuneaton and Bedworth on Saturdays over the last few months you may have noticed the street entertainment on offer.
We have experienced a number of different entertainers including Punch and Judy, story telling, dancing, jazz bands and even a Chinese dragon.
Our aim in providing this entertainment is to provide additional atmosphere to the town centres and from my experience of sampling the entertainment on offer and from surveys we have conducted with shoppers it seems to be having a very positive effect.
To their credit our Mayor and Mayoress, Gerald Smith and Sheila Billingham, have also entered into the spirit of promoting our town centres and have been out meeting, greeting and chatting to shoppers which has also been very well received.
As a council we are working very hard with limited resources to promote and raise the profile of our town centres, we see them to be of vital importance to our borough.
In the current economic climate I sincerely hope that residents will join the council in supporting our town centres and shop local.
With the cost of fuel, shopping locally certainly makes financial sense also the more shoppers we can attract to our towns the more inward investment we can attract which is vital in developing and improving our town centres for the future.
If you have not been into Nuneaton or Bedworth town centres recently give it a try, you may even bump into a Chinese dragon.
