What a proud day for our soldiers

May 23 2008

By Cllr Marcus Jones, leader of the council

It's been all change at Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council - and now it's all change with our Talk of the Town Hall column.

Cllr Marcus Jones has taken over as leader of the council, and will be writing a column each week to give you an insight into the inner workings of the town hall.

Cllr Jones has been a Conservative councillor for Whitestone for three years, and leader of the Tories for two of those.

ON SUNDAY a freedom of the borough event was held in Nuneaton town centre.

The event was held to reaffirm the 30 Signals Regiment right to march through the streets of the borough on all ceremonial occasions with their colours flying, bayonets fixed, drums beating and bands playing.

It was great to see so many residents, veterans, councillors and guests come along and support the 30 Signals Regiment, and those who attended witnessed a fine display of regimental marching from the soldiers from Gamecock Barracks, which was very well received by the large and appreciative crowd.

It was excellent to see the regiment put on such a good display. Not only did the soldiers demonstrate a great deal of mental concentration but also they showed great physical strength and endurance.

That was especially true of the sergeant who held a commemorative scroll with arms outstretched for the whole of the parade which lasted about 30 minutes.

Most of us only get to see these brave soldiers at ceremonial occasions and its easy for people not associated with the forces to forget their day to day work.

Personally I think that its important that these type of events take place for us to acknowledge the role the soldiers play and the contribution that they make.

Its also important that the soldiers feel welcomed by the borough and I am glad to report that they certainly were on Sunday.

I am certainly looking forward to seeing the regiment again at the Veterans Day being held in Bulkington on June 27 and the Armistice Day celebrations in Bedworth later this year.
