IT’S a Monday morning and you wake up to the alarm clock beeping next to your head.
Just where did the weekend go? As most households experience the rush of kids to school, packed lunches, work, after-school activities, jobs to do at home, finally sleep and repeat times five, I don’t think that’s a prescription for a healthy life.
We all tend to take on too much and try to fit everything in to a jam-packed week, whether it be overtime at the office, helping an elderly or ill relative or just trying to run the home.
As a society we need to learn to relax. When was the last time you took a bit of you time? Went for a walk, had a massage or even enjoyed an hour at the gym worry-free?
Well if you’re shaking your head then I think it’s about time you did some stress- busting activity. Stress is a serious issue and, undealt with, can lead to serious consequences. During times of stress we release certain hormones that help us deal with it. However, these hormones have repercussions on our bodies. Our blood pressure and resting heart rate may increase - this in turn can lead to one of the major killers, coronary heart disease.
Stress has also been linked with depression along with other problems, such as sleep apnoea and restlessness, craving for food or lack of appetite, muscle cramps and emotional changes like anger and anxiety. So you can see stress can be a major health risk if left untreated.
Bear in mind that when stress levels are on the up, take a time out and do something you enjoy. After all how are you going to manage your hectic life if you can’t manage your stress?
