Charity fund in Nuneaton tops £275,000 after two decades of support

Feb 10 2012

A CHARITY fund which was kicked off with a football match 23 years ago has now topped £275,000.

It was launched as a thank you to the intensive care unit at Nuneaton’s George Eliot Hospital after the treatment given to Kath Turner when she suffered a heart attack.

Kath and husband Pete were joined by a group of friends to form BASICS (Bermuda and Stockingford Intensive Care Supporters) and the inaugural football match, between teams of veteran players, was made an annual fixture and various fundraising events including sell-out concerts followed.

When Kath died suddenly from a brain haemorrhage in August 2010, Pete vowed BASICS would carry on and he presented the hospital with a cheque for £11,000 at the latest variety show held at Stockingford Pavilion.

He said: “A lot of people and many hours of hard work have been put in to help us raise another astounding amount. It’s been another fantastic year for BASICS with many individual donations coming in, from £20 to £700. I am amazed at the support we continue to get from all sources.”

Coronary care consultant Dr Asok Raman said: “I’ve been at the George Eliot Hospital for 11 years now and I never cease to be amazed by the generosity of the people who support BASICS.

“In this day and age, £11,000 is a huge amount and I can’t express how humbled I am for the support we get. I promise that the money will be well spent on life-saving monitoring equipment.”
