A single goal ends Bedworth's hopes

Sep 23 2011

Rushall Olympic 1 Bedworth United 0

RUSHALL limped into the next stage of the FA Cup following an uninspiring single goal victory against eternal bogey side Bedworth at Dales Lane.

The only goal of the tie arrived on 22 minutes when Ian Roper hauled down Ahmed Obeng to yield a penalty kick that Lei Brown expertly dispatched into the bottom left corner to mark his welcome return to Dales Lane from Redditch.

However, by that time the hosts should already have been in front after former Walsall defender Roper had taken out Obeng to concede a spot-kick after just nine minutes. But as Matt Lewis side-footed his penalty towards the bottom right corner, keeper Tom Gutteridge saved comfortably.

Keeper Chris Gemmell arguably didn’t have a save to make in the first half but ten minutes after the interval, he was in fine form to deny Alex Dean from distance. Matt Gardiner stroked the loose ball into an empty net but an off-side flag had already been raised.

Gemmell denied Mitchell Piggon at full stretch and then Mitchell Tolley somehow diverted over a drive right on the goal line as Bedworth rallied in the final minutes.

The visitors’ luck was compounded on 88 minutes as they ended the game with ten men when skipper Roper finally received a second caution and was sent off for fouling Pics substitute Luke Edwards.
