BEDWORTH United manager Steve Farmer admits he is disappointed to have lost the services of improving wing-back Alex Dean to Nuneaton Town. Seven days notice of approach went in last Friday for the 21-year-old, who is the twin brother of Boro centre-back Gareth, and though the player has been sidelined with an ankle injury for the past three weeks, the hopes are that he will make his debut at Eastwood Town this weekend. Farmer said: “Alex wants to go and I’m not going to hold him back. “He was a key part of my team and I think the world of him and when a club like Nuneaton come knocking on the door then you don’t turn them down. “Alex was with me at Nuneaton Griff in the Midland Combination and in just a couple of seasons he’s reverted from being a right winger to a wing-back and made a big success of it. “He’s arguably been our most consistent player this season before the ankle problem. We shall miss him for sure as he’s a hard working and dedicated non-league footballer.” Nuneaton chief Kevin Wilkin added: “Alex has agreed in principle to joining but nothing has gone through just yet. “Should all go well he’ll come in to the squad but whether he makes it for Saturday is doubtful. We will wait and see what happens. “He’s been having treatment with our physio Paul Egan since he suffered the injury and I feel maybe Eastwood will be a week or so too soon.” Dean has been brought to Town to cover for experienced Graham Ward, who is under treatment for a knee problem that was expected to keep him out until the New Year but Egan reckons if things go to plan, an operation will not be necessary and he could be back before Christmas. The Boro physio said: “It’s not the same knee he had problems with previously this season. “He will continue to rest up and hopefully in a week or two the position will be a lot clearer but there’s a definite chance he will not need to undergo surgery.” And while Nuneaton, fourth in the Blue Square Bet North table, continue to flourish on the back of an impressive seven-match unbeaten run, Bedworth lost their leadership of the Evo-Stik Central Division One following a lapse at home on Saturday when they were held to a 1-1 draw by mid-table Burnham. Farmer admitted it was a game his men should have won but he intends to make the most of the positives to come out of the game. “We went a goal down inside the first minute and that changed the shape of the game. “We had to show a bit of character to get back on terms and once that was achieved we had enough possession and chances to have taken all three points. “However we are creating opportunities which is good as is our record this season in the league where we have lost just twice in 18 fixtures and that’s a record we can certainly build upon heading towards the end of the year.” |
