Bedworth United ease into next round of the FA Trophy
Oct 14 2011
BEDWORTH, leaders of the Southern League Central, made a far from comfortable passage in the FA Trophy after an inspired display by Market Drayton goalkeeper Damon Stevens.
Stevens produced a glut of late saves to keep the Northern League strugglers in with a chance until the last kick.
In-form Bedworth, beaten just twice in 14 games this season, looked to be cruising into the next round after leading 2-0 within the hour.
Top scorer Mitchell Piggon steered them into a 34th minute lead with a fine looping header from 15 yards after his strike-partner Ashley Robinson crossed from the right. Robinson added their second goal after 60 minutes when he headed neatly into the net at the far post from a Tom Bates corner.
But then a superb 20-yard left foot drive from midfielder Stuart Ellis in the 67th minute brought Market Drayton back into the tie.
Bedworth responded by bombarding the Market Drayton goal only to be denied by Stevens whose saves from Piggon, Bates and Ashley Spencer were out of the top drawer.
