Bedworth United sitting pretty at top of table

Sep 2 2011

FROM a club that many regarded as relegation candidates, to a side that you can’t help but sit up and take notice of – Bedworth United have certainly made the perfect start to the new season.

The Greenbacks remain undefeated, after picking up another four points over the Bank Holiday weekend against Northwood and Daventry Town to ensure they stay at the pinnacle of the Evo-Stik League Southern division one central table.

Now other teams in the division are paying attention to the team from The Oval and for the man at the helm, Steve Farmer, that means he is doing a good job but he doesn’t want anyone to get carried away.

The manager said: “People have been saying that we dropped two points, but should you see it as a point well gained? Because we have won a few games people’s aspirations of Bedworth have changed, but we are keeping our feet on the ground and we hope other people do that.

“I was a bit disappointed with Saturday’s performance as we went one up but then showed a bit of lack of respect towards our opponents and seemed to expect them to roll over, which is never going to happen.

“But it is a learning curve for the lads and it was encouraging that we were able to come from behind. Then we were much better on Monday and got the goals at crucial times. I haven’t been overly pleased with the goals conceded but we have scored 18 goals in six games, and once again the forwards have scored.” Monday’s victory over Daventry saw strike duo Mitchell Piggon and Matthew Gardner both on the scoresheet once more as they continue to lead from the front. And their boss could not be happier with the way his marksmen are conducting themselves on the pitch.

“For two lads that have never played at this level it has been very pleasing,” said Farmer. “Having worked with Mitchell before I have no qualms with him and he is a fantastic finisher.

“I was aware of Matthew and made a concerted effort to get him in and with Matthew Brown waiting in the wings as well, we have got three out and out centre forwards which is great.”

Bedworth’s next challenge is to see off Sutton Coldfield at home on Saturday and they could be without experienced captain Ian Roper who is struggling with a hamstring strain.

However Farmer has now worries at all about the rest of his squad stepping up to the mark and has confidence in every single one of them.

He said: “We have been able to keep a consistent side for the first few games but things always come up. And the players that haven’t featured are fully conscious that their opportunity will come.

“It is not about the 11 on the pitch, it is about the 16 in the squad who all play their part and it is the collective that is getting the results for us.”
