Below par Bedworth United put up a fight to stretch unbeaten run
Nov 10 2011
REVENGE was oh so sweet for Steve Farmer’s Bedworth United as they whipped North Greenford at The Oval on Tuesday night to stretch their unbeaten league run to seven games and return to the top of the table.
The Greenbacks, whose sole league defeat in 14 outings came against The Blues in September, ran out winners despite being below their best. It was evident that Greenford came to Bedworth bent on using spoiling tactics but in the end they were outclassed by a team that’s proving to be a threat to all.
Fresh from a 4-2 win at Biggleswade on Saturday, United kept up the good work and the smile on Farmer’s face at the final whistle told its own story.
First goals of the season for both Andy Spencer and Alex Dean were enough to decide the issue in favour of the hosts who made the most of Slough’s 1-1 draw at AFC Hayes to go top.
There was an early scare for Farmer’s charges when they failed to clear their lines in the opening 90 seconds allowing Ricky Pither a clear view of the target but his effort flew wide.
It was not until the 15-minute mark that the hosts carved out an opening only for Ashley Robinson’s looping header to fly high over the bar.
Robinson then headed over from close range from Tom Bates’ cross before the home side took the lead on 29 minutes when Andy Spencer exchanged passes with his twin brother Ashley before rifling a low 15-yarder out of reach of keeper Gary Jallow.
Farmer brought on Mitch Piggon at the interval up front for Robinson, who lived on a tightrope after being booked midway through the opening half, while just before the hour skipper Ian Roper limped off to be replaced by Jamie Greenway in defence.
The changes proved fruitful as on 65 minutes the Greenbacks doubled their advantage. Bates won a corner on the left and his set-piece to the near post was met with venom by Dean, who thundered a header past Jarrow.
One disappointment was that just 124 spectators witnessed Bedworth’s sixth home league success of the campaign.
