Dream start for Bedworth United is the dawn of a new era

Aug 26 2011

IT WAS a dream - it was all a beautiful dream.

This is what many a Bedworth United fan are expecting to hear any time soon. But fear not Greenbacks fans, you really are top of the league with a record of played four, won four.

Chalfont St Peter, Barton Rovers, Fleet Town and now St Neots Town have all been felled by the sword of Steve Farmer’s young side as they have amassed 12 points to sit nicely atop the Evo-Stik League Southern division one central table.

And the Greenbacks boss believes his team are deserving of their high perch, but is refusing to get carried away.

Farmer said: “It’s a case of us assembling a side from what is probably one of the smallest budgets in the league. So we have got young players who have been given the opportunity to play at this level for the first time and some of them have stepped up one or two levels.

“These players have got good technical abilities and it is up to us to organise them and we have done that. Their attitudes have been first class and they want to succeed, and so do I, which is only for the benefit of the club.

“Yes, we are over the moon but I am a realist and football can change overnight.”

Bedworth have notched 12 goals in the four games and conceded just three, and although every win is vital, it was the 2-1 victory at St Neots Town on Tuesday night that bought the biggest smile to Farmer’s face.

He said: “When a lot of teams go to St Neots there is a fear factor of their players and the facilities. But we never change the way we play and in the second half we showed we are what we are and that proved to be for our benefit.

“Bedworth United over the last decade has had an air of negativity as there has been no real success to shout about. I want to create that feeling of a new era and a fresh start, and as a manager I want to be judged on what I create and not what I have inherited.

“This is only the start of the season and the squad seem quite settled and as we get to 10 games, 15 games, they will know each other even more.

“But they are young players who will make mistakes and we will lose games, but it is all about how we bounce back from them.”

He added: “It may be predictable to say, but we want to get the supporters back through the gate. The side have been applauded off a few times but it would be great if we can reinvigorate the club and we hope to do that with these raw, young players.

“They are enthusiastic, as am I, and we all want to get to the highest level we can.”
