Tactics are payingt off for Bedworth United's Steve Farmer

Dec 9 2011

STEVE Farmer plotted Bedworth United’s way towards a fourth consecutive away league victory on Saturday at AFC Hayes and did so by bravely resting two of his most influential players.

The Greenbacks boss felt it was time to rest leading-scorer Ashley Robinson and the talented Ashley Spencer to give Matt Gardner and Mitch Piggon a chance and the move worked perfectly in a 4-2 success for the Oval outfit.

Despite having skipper and centre-back Ian Roper red carded for a third time this term, United produced a fine all-round display to deservedly take all three points in Middlesex.

Farmer said: “We have a tough December and January ahead of us and I want everyone at their peak. It was a big call to leave the two Ashleys out and put Matt and Mitch under the spotlight but the plan worked to perfection, the only blemish was Ropes’ sending off.”

Gardner bagged a brace and Piggon, who turned down a move to Coalville Town in midweek, also found the net as United continue to impress under their resourceful boss.

Farmer added: “It was pleasing when Mitch told me he was staying. He’s a great lad and I think the world of him and what’s more he’s become a better player now than he has ever been. I didn’t want to lose him as he has a big part to play at this club.

“And as regards Matt, he is an out-and-out goalscorer and showed it at Hayes. I believe in both lads.”
