Nuneaton Town assistant manager happy with result but not performance

Feb 3 2012

“GREAT result but not a great performance” was how assistant manager Ken Gillard greeted promotion-seeking Nuneaton Town’s 2-1 win over battling Vauxhall Motors at the Triton Arena on Saturday.

Gillard was spot on with his assessment as Boro ended a spell of four draws and a defeat in their last five outings by coming from a goal adrift to take the points thanks to a brace of Danny Glover penalties.

Gillard said: “The first half was abysmal from our point of view and Vauxhall thoroughly deserved their interval lead with a superbly taken goal.

“Their formation caused us problem before the break but we got things sorted in the second half and got the result we desperately needed.

“In the end we exploited their weaknesses at the back with some pace that won us the penalties.

“Danny has shown a lot of bottle as he wasn’t on the field long before winning the first penalty and he wanted to take it and put it away with aplomb. For the second, Wes burst clear on a great Mark Noon pace and got chopped down. Again Glover has made no mistake and I’m pleased for him.

“Vauxhall asked us a lot of questions and when you concede first it’s always tough to get back when things are going against you.

“With leaders Hyde and Stalybridge losing plus Guiseley dropping points also this was a great win for us and one that will really give us a massive lift going into a tough month of fixtures that includes three of the top four inside eight days starting next weekend at FC Halifax followed by Guiseley and Stalybridge.”
