Nuneaton Town boss gives backing to Wes York

Jan 20 2012

TEENAGER Wes York may have seemingly lost his goal-scoring touch after a six-game barren spell but manager Kevin Wilkin believes the talented 18-year-old will bounce back.

As a striker of some stature himself during his playing days, the Boro boss knows goal spells come and go but reckons when the going gets tough it’s about keeping your confidence and the ability to keep getting into scoring positions that will reap rewards.

York, who came on the scene from Ansty Nomads in November and set the team alight with five goals in six starts plus numerous assists, has hit a dry patch that has corresponded with the team’s run of poor results.

And while York has been one of the few to come through the disappointing spell, in which Boro secured just two points in four league outings since Christmas, he needs to find that goal-grabbing expertise quickly if Boro are going to get back on the play-off track, as Wilkin insists they will.

The Nuneaton chief said: “Wes had a great start and it was always going to be tough to keep up those levels.

“Certainly at home the opposition play a lot deeper so it becomes a lot harder to get the ball beyond their defence for Wes to feed upon.

“It’s away where we need to use his ability and pace to work off the shoulder of the last defender. There’s no doubt he gets more opportunities at opposing grounds and hopefully that will be proved this Saturday at Boston.

“Last Saturday, Blyth, like many others this season who have come to our place, got plenty of bodies behind the ball and cut down space between the back line and keeper – where Wes does his best work.

“But like all good front players he will get the goal touch back, particularly now that Andy Brown is with us. He works hard and is a player to feed off and that’s what Wes needs.”
