Manor Park RFC limber up for crunch local derby

Dec 2 2011

Market Bosworth RFC 2nd 36 - 22 Manor Park RFC ‘A’

MANOR Park prepared for this weekend’s crunch local derby against Atherstone, by taking on a strong Market Bosworth side on their own turf.

The Griff and Coton club will play host to the Midlands 4 West South clash on Saturday afternoon, with Park searching for a sixth win in eight league games.

Atherstone’s season has been a comparative struggle so far, picking up just two wins from seven, and will be looking to avenge last season’s home and away defeats to Manor.

With a free weekend Park split their remaining roster of players with a fusion of seconds and firsts, scoring four tries on their travels.

Unfortunately, three early tries for the hosts proved to be the separating factor, as Park struggled at the set piece and to make tackles stick.

But there were plenty of reasons to be positive - flanker Andy Checkley performing like a man possessed and fly-half Dan Joyce penning Bosworth back with a number of booming touch finders.

Led by captain Matt Marston, Manor slowed the game down in the second half and punched through the heart of Bosworth’s pack forcing many penalties.

Stand-in hooker Chris Goode scored a try from a quick tap penalty and scrum-half Gary Lakin, who was sin-binned earlier in the match, also went over from close range.

Scrum-half turned winger Liam Rose scored his side’s first try when he cleverly intercepted a pass 30 metres out to romp home and score. Checkley also crashed over to wrap up his man of the match performance with a deserved try.

Second team regular Michael Douglas underlined his rapid development running bravely with ball in hand and Chris Poulter impressed at loose-head prop.

Manor’s B team loaned Bedworth Bears players to fulfil their fixture and were punished for their good will, losing 15-7 with their try coming from Nick Bishop.

Park entertain Atherstone at 2.15pm on Saturday, while the third team tackle Lutterworth III at Nuneaton Academy, with any players wishing to have a run-out urged to call Bobby Bridge on 07792 759180.
