TWO packed out gigs in under 24 hours highlighted the emergence of Spuff in the local music scene. The three-piece rock and roll outfit first filled the Griff and Coton Club, in Heath End Road, on Saturday March 26 before attracting a large audience to the Kingswood Tavern the next day for an afternoon performance. “Things are going really well at the moment and it’s always good to play your music in front of as many people as possible,” said lead guitarist and singer Dan Joyce. “We’ve got quite a good following now, we have good fun at our gigs. It’s not all about the music – we like to bring some entertainment too.” However, it’s not all fun and games for Spuff, as they continue to blend in new songs of their own writing, with an eclectic mix of cover material. Spuff’s covers pay homage to artists such as The Ramones, The Who, Chuck Berry, The Coral, The Killers, Oasis, Johnny Cash and The Temptations. The band comprises of brothers Dan, 21, and Lee, 19, who plays bass and shares the singing with his older sibling. Drummer Alex Tustain, 20, completes the band’s tight and youthful line up. “We may be young, and just the three of us, but we love our music and I think that’s reflected in the choice of the songs we cover,” said Lee. The band has been together for three years and has been gigging locally for two, performing at The Royal Oak (Stockingford), Kingswood Tavern, Railway Tavern, Crow’s Nest, The Crown and the Griff and Coton club. They are next in action on Sunday April 3 at The Crew, in Queens Road, from 5.30pm. The band’s own material is fused together in weekly practice sessions held at Hinckley’s Rewind Rehearsal Studios and through their frequent live performances. “We feel like our own songs are coming on quite well now and people who come watch us regularly are getting into them, as much as they do the covers,” added Dan. “It’s been a good start to the year and we’re all really enjoying it, getting on stage and just making sure people have a good time.” So what does the future hold for the popular trio? “For now it’s just more of the same, keep on gigging and playing to more people in different areas, and hopefully people will like what they hear and see and watch out for when our next gig is,” said Dan. “All the venues we’ve played at so far we have returned to, or are returning too, so something must be going right!” Details on Spuff’s forthcoming gigs or how to book the band, can be found on Facebook by joining the Spuff group, visiting www.myspace.com/spuffmusic, by emailing access_lee@hotmail.co.uk or by calling 07505 113345. |
