Bringing in the big shops to Coventry

Jan 17 2008

by Fiona Scott, political editor

JOHN Lewis, Selfridges, Harvey Nicholls, House of Fraser, Habitat - Birmingham has them all but Coventry doesn't.

Not to mention fashion stores including French Connection, Ted Baker, Zara, Karen Millen and Mango.

Shoppers here are hoping the promised £1 billion revamp of Coventry city centre will draw some of these big names in.

The city council wants to double the amount of shopping in the heart of the city in the huge plan to transform the city centre.

So what does it take for a city to attract the big stores?

You might imagine a high proportion of footballers' wives or Absolutely Fabulous-types are a pre-requisite for Harvey Nicks to open.

Not so, according to a spokesman for the leading brand department store.

"It's a multitude of factors," she said.

"For example, when we looked at our next development in Bristol, which will open this fall, we looked geographically at where we were not currently present.

"We're trying to cover the whole country so everyone has a Harvey Nicholls some time close to them.

"We're looking for a great location and a statement building for our purposes."
