Whether you chose to come to either Cov or Warwick uni, or got here through clearing, then welcome! Coventry
Coventry people are generally friendly, despite what you may have read about the place. Our city has two universities (Coventry and Warwick) so we are well used to student types milling about the place. The city did have a bad repuatation for violence, but is quite safe now. The arrival of the SkyDome complex has improved the choice of nightlife emmensely. Housed in the complex are pubs, clubs, bars, restaurants and the Odeon cinema. Football
Local team: Coventry City FC aka the Sky Blues. City are flying high in Nationwide Division One after being relegated in 2001 after 34 years in the top flight. You get a better class of supporter at Cov. Aggression is mainly vented on the board rather than students or visting fans. It's well-worth an outing if you are missing some live action (tickets are cheaper than the Prem). Check out iccoventry's Cov City pages for comprehensive coverage of the Sky Blues including the weekly nonsense that is Sky Blue Monday: http://iccoventry.icnetwork.co.uk/0300coventrycity/ Out and About Coventry has got a lot more to offer than a second-rate football team, naff architecture and naked women riding the streets.
As well as the above, we've got a cracking nightlife too! iccoventry's What's On channel features entertainments news, reviews and an unrivalled listings service. Updated daily, we can give you the lowdown on the city's high life. http://iccoventry.icnetwork.co.uk/0800whatson/ Our Days Out channel tells you all you need to know if you need a break from study: http://iccoventry.icnetwork.co.uk/0815daysout/ Now for the important stuff - shopping! Coventry's getting better for the choice of stores since the opening of the swanky Lower Precinct development. The city centre houses the usual outlets such as H&M, New Look, Debenhams, M&S, BHS, Boots and River Island. We're a bit short on record shops though, with just Virgin, HMV and a few independents to choose from. Central Six Retail Park Located near the rail station this is a great shopping area withing walking distance of the town cente. Houses GAP, Next, Brantano, Outfit, Hobbycraft (great for artists supplies) and several sports shops. Birmingham A short train ride away and well worth a visit. Try Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays as the Rag Market is open. Here you will find second hand clothes and mucho bargainos. Usual large stores and a healthy smattering of designer shops if your parents are visiting. Solihull New one here. An affluent area coupled with a spanking new shopping area makes this commuter town a must for retail junkies. John Lewis, Hennes and designer stores. Very Footballers' Wives! Leamington
You may live here already if you're from Warwick. Some great little boutiques, ideal for present-shopping.
Leicester Further afield, though if you've got a mate with a car then only 30 mins away up the M69. Loads of trendy shops, a Rackhams plus usual outlets. Travel
Coventry has excellent road and rail connections with the reat of the country. Birmingham Airport is nearby, about £15 taxi ride from the city centre. Visit http://www.bhx.co.uk. Centro is the local bus and train operator, enquiries 024 7655 9559. Coventry's bus timetable is now online at http://www.travelwm.co.uk/bus/index.asp
Travelcards are well worth getting if you have far to travel to either campus. Buses here don't give change. In addition to a number of rather bewildering schemes they offer a Student Faresaver card which is exclusive to all students over the age of 18 and in full-time education. These are available from newsagents and Pool Meadow bus station and cover the whole academic year as three terms. The card costs £88 for two of the three terms from Sept until Dec and Dec until April, TWM also offer a summer special at £43. Centro - who oversee all the public transport across the region - also run a travel card scheme that covers local trains, the Metro and all buses (regardless of operator). Travel to Warwick Uni on the number 12 from Pool Meadow, here's the timetable: http://www.travelwm.co.uk/bus/timetables/results.asp?routeno=12&placename=&Submit.x=30&Submit.y=18 Stagecoach operate many buses to U of W from Leamington and Whitnash.
